Made in collaboration with the expert ukiyo-e printer and carver Tadashi Toda, “Ochre” (1983) showcases the weight and lyricism of Diebenkorn’s use of line and color. Textured ochre hues contrasted by blues, greens, and pinks which counter the background’s expressionist gestures, give the viewer a sense of rhythm – the smudging and wandering of colors that consume the eye intimately as component parts, while always acutely aware of the narrative whole.
