This lithograph from 1969, “Anchovy,” embodies Ruscha’s playful approach to printmaking. The word “anchovy” is placed against a monochromatic background with letters seemingly composed from spilled liquid, hinting to an allusion of a fish swimming in water. The word functions as a found object, made more tangible by the letters’ trompe l’oeil rendering.
