“Untitled” (1961-1978) is among Donald Judd’s earliest abstract prints, created just before he abandoned the use of curved lines in favor of straight horizontals and verticals. Produced in black with an underlay of cadmium red oil paint, Judd emphasized the depth and texture of the material and color by allowing the grain of the woodblock and the red underpainting to show through the black ground. The work can be situated in a brief transitional phase within Judd’s practice, between his earlier organic and figurative imagery and his nature rectilinear vocabulary.
